This Is How We Do Windows

window repair

If you’ve ever have watched a window replacement job, you will find it amazing that it takes one day to replace 20+ windows. A customer of mine brought this up to me as it took us only one day to install his windows, only one day to replace all of the rot on the old window frames and only one day to paint all of the affected areas to match the existing trim. The reason why other companies can do window replacements so quickly is because they simply pop in a full unit and cap the exterior wood with aluminum; their term for this is “vinyl cap”. I was a single family home builder for over 8 years and one thing I learned during that time is you can’t cover up a problem because it will always cost you in the end. Caping windows in my view is going to be the next synthetic stucco disaster. The water will get behind the aluminum capping and all of the wood under it will rot; however, much like synthetic stucco, you will never see the rot and therefore you will be none the wiser. If you’re replacing your windows, please do so the right way by hiring the proper contractor who won’t take any shortcuts. Photos below are from a job we did a year ago for siding replacement. A window company replaced this homeowner’s windows just a year before we started the siding replacement job. The owner did not like the aluminum capping and asked that we remove it and use the existing old trim. This is what we found: the first three photos are results from a company that did a poor job by only foaming and insulating half of the windows before putting on the capping. The last photo is of a window that had been capped for over four years and this wood trim rotted.

Shutters: A Great Way To Accessorize

shutters Just how important are your shutters? While shutters are not functionally necessary, they are a great way to accessorize your home. At Temmel Siding, we take pride in our Hinge and S-Hook Shutters. We make our shutters out of a non-rot composite material on-site and then we place the shutters on true hinges and s-hooks so that they can be closed shut if desired. “Shutter-Dogs” is another term we use here at Temmel Siding for our s-hook shutters. To make your shutters really pop, placing them on hinges is a great way to give your home more depth rather than just sticking vinyl shutters onto the walls.

Beware of Lead Based Paint

lead paint removal

Did you know that if your home was built before 1978 and you’re having any exterior renovations completed that could lead to paint chip residue, you must have your home tested to see if your paint is lead-based. Back in the day, lead-based paint was used and since the turn of the century, it was discovered that the lead could cause brain damage in small children and other serious health problems in adults if paint chips were consumed. If the paint on your home does contain lead, your contractor has a very strict lead-removal process to adhere to and if your contractor is caught by the EPA doing it incorrectly, he/she could be charged $32,500! You’re probably wondering why lead was ever put in paint to begin with. Back in the day, lead enhanced the color of the paint. When modern technology was introduced, people found other safer products to help enhance paint colors. We are currently removing lead-based exterior paint from a home in Midtown, which involves the following:
  • Wearing very specific clothing items, such as protective goggles, suits and masks
  • Putting plastic barriers all around the premise to catch any lead when stripping the paint
  • Putting hazardous signs all around the premise to keep people, especially children, away
